Wurzburg

Today I'm sharing with you the city of Wurzburg, Germany!
This was our second stop in Germany, and a more modern city than Bamberg. Part of this is because Wurzberg was hit hard during the Allied Attacks of WWII, but the amount of original architecture still standing is astounding, considering the circumstances. Both the Residenz Bishop's Palace and the Romanesque Dom survived, and are great highlights of the city to this day.
View of the Dom in the background as you cross over the Main River.

Wonderful stonework on the Residenz, or Bishop's Palace.

Loved these fun trees in the garden of the Residenz.

If you're any sort of wine connoisseur, you might be familiar with some of the Franconian wines and history in this area of Germany. Most Franconian wines are packaged in what is called a Bocksbeutel, a round-bodied bottle that derived from the workers who, long ago, required a bottle they could take with them up the hills of the vineyard. The shape of the bottles prevented the wine from rolling down the hill, and the packaged has continued to this day. It was actually pretty cool--the other day when I was in Daytona with Kyle, we went into this new store Total Wine, and not only did we find the smokey beer from Bamberg I talked about earlier this week, but we also found some Franconian wine in the Bocksbeutel!
(Sorry, the picture quality isn't great but you get the idea!)

We only had a half a day in Wurzberg, but I would have loved to have spent more time perusing the shops. There was a great little downtown area that had all these cute stores, and as you might recall from previous entries, Wurzberg is where I bought my sandals to help my Achilles Tendonitis. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go back... What a shame!

Have a great Thursday!
