Wedding Wednesday: Engagement Photos

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

Kyle & I got our engagement photos done over my winter break when we went back to Colorado, and I cannot stop looking at them! Taylor Jones Photography did such an amazing job. These are just a few of my favorites, but you can see more in her blog post about our session

I was so happy with how our outfits looked; I coordinated us perfectly! The weather was perfect in the sense that snow on the ground, made for gorgeous pictures, although I know we were both a little cold; Kyle especially since he doesn't have good shoes for the snow. Overall it was a fun session, and I can't stop looking because every picture makes me smile! I'm glad I already ordered our Save The Dates uniting photos from the proposal, because I have no idea how I would have narrowed pictures down otherwise!

2015: A Year In Review

Thursday, December 31, 2015

Today I'm sharing the highlights from this little blog of mine in 2015! I cannot believe the year is already coming to a close; another year, flying right on by!

I started out the year with a lots of cute Winter and Early Spring outfits, but my favorite was this icy monochromatic look.

Then a crazy thing happened; my sweet guy Kyle proposed over spring break, and because he hired a photographer I was able to share Proposal Pictures! This event lead to several posts dedicated to all things wedding; highlights were Venue Hunting 101, Wedding Dress Shopping, Centerpiece Ideas, and Wedding Day Hair Ideas.

My summer adventures prompted a lot of blog posts, especially What I Learned From A 30 Piece Wardrobe. If you're freezing right now, look at the pictures in my post about Lake Como to feel better. That is definitely one of my favorite places ever!

You loved reading all about my Stitch Fix Hauls: 2 / 3 / 4 I can't wait to order my next Stitch Fix!

I shared many great Fall Outfits, but if I had to pick two it would be this early fall shorts combo and my poncho & booties look! Both feature the Color Of 2015, Marsala.

I shared multiple ways to wear Plum Cords and Denim Dresses.

And I finished off the year with come cute wintery outfits from my trip to Colorado! This outfit with my Red Speckled Cardigan is my personal favorite.

Thank you all so much for following me in 2015! I hope you've enjoyed reading my posts as much as I've enjoyed writing them. Cheers to 2015, and to all the blessings & adventures 2016 will throw our way. Happy New Year, Y'all!

Wedding Wednesday: Hair for the Big Day

Wednesday, September 16, 2015

Yesterday I got my hair cut, and as my hairstylist and I were catching up we started talking wedding hair! Now, I have a lot planned (or ideas planned) for many things but hair is not one of them, just because there are so many other more pressing things for both wedding and school right now. But she got me thinking and so I took a little break to explore some ideas on Pinterest. A few of my favorites...

What a beautiful, classic chignon! Source.

I love a good updo, and this is one of my all-time favorites I've seen. Source.

A ponytail of sorts, but I love the headpiece accessory. Source.

I love the integration of the vintage brooch in this half-up style! Source.

A dressed-up & unique take on a ponytail for bridal hair. Source.

This beautiful twisted updo would be perfect for an August wedding. Source.

This braided style would be elegant for a relaxed but pulled together wedding day vibe! Source.

One thing I definitely want to make sure is that my wedding day hair is me, and something I would wear on the daily if I could. In my opinion, some brides go over the top and over-style their hair, which makes it look a little fake. But that's just my personal opinion.

Which one of these is your favorite? If you're married, how was your hair styled for the Big Day?

400th Post

Thursday, September 10, 2015

Today marks my 400th post on This Styled Life! How exciting! So in a celebration of sorts, I thought I'd do a wrap-up and share some of my favorite posts from 2015 thus far...

I shared some great winter looks, including this Jewel Toned ensemble, and a dressed-up Olive look.

To help you figure out what your style is, I wrote the post Defining Your Personal Style and walked you through the process.

This spring, I had fun with pastels in the posts Pastel & Short Hair and Denim Dreams. (The haircut in that post is the last haircut I had, and I am going next week to get one and cannot wait. My hair is ridiculous right now, because in addition to the shortness she cut it to, it's also a bob and I am dying without layers!)

I have received two Stitch Fix's and shared the contents with you... Stitch Fix Haul #2 and Stitch Fix Haul #3. (Speaking of, I have my 4th Fix coming later this month, so get excited for another post!)

I've shared some details of Kyle's and I becoming engaged in the posts Marry Your Best Friend and Wedding Wednesday: Proposal Pictures. I still cannot believe sometimes that we are getting married in less than a year! I'm excited for the next step we are taking in our lives as a couple.

When I went on my study abroad to Italy, I shared some details of my travels. Some of my favorite places in Italy were Cinque Terre and Lake Como!

I shared some tips on Wedding Venue Hunting, in celebration of Kyle & I getting some wedding planning done.

And most recently, you've read some more decor and design related posts, like this Inspired Style: Tropical Punch post, my collaboration Decorating 101:Starting From Scratch With Invaluable, and the details from my Studio 3 Office Design Project from last semester.

I'm looking forward to moving forward with some fun content this fall, and continuing to share my crazy life with y'all! I hope you've enjoyed the past 400 posts, and I hope you have a great Thursday.

Wedding Wednesday: Venue Hunting

Wednesday, July 29, 2015

After you get engaged, the first two questions you will be asked non-stop are:
When are you getting married? Where are you going to get married?
Kyle proposed to me in March, but with school and my trip to Italy, I had a lot more on my mind than wedding planning. So I fielded these questions with vague answers for quite some time. But Kyle spent almost two weeks out here in Colorado and we were finally able to make some big decisions! We hopped right into wedding planning by spending two days touring venues. It would have been three, but early on we figured out exactly what we wanted and were able to cancel the final venue tour. Today, I'm sharing with you all some tips I have for future brides on venue hunting & how to pick the perfect place to celebrate your future union as a couple!

1. Narrow down venues before you set up tours. Tour your top 5 favorite places! With Kyle being here for just a short time, I wasn't about to force him into spending the time touring an endless amount of venues. Look through planning websites like The Knot, local wedding magazines, etc, to find inspiration for what you are wanting. Kyle and I both enjoy the outdoors, so I knew the place that would showcase our personalities as a couple best would be a venue with a mountain-view outdoor ceremony space, and a rustic barn-like reception space. I like to be super fancy on occasion, but we are a pretty laid-back couple. I didn't consider any venue that didn't represent or offer those things. When looking at a potential venue's website, look through the pictures of past weddings there. If there aren't many, try a google search "wedding at Venue A" to see if you can find pictures on any blogs. I found this to be helpful with a couple different venues. Pictures from past weddings definitely help you to see how it might look come your wedding day.

2. Create a question checklist. Know what you want to ask, and what you should ask. A simple google search gave me a lot of different "wedding venue tour checklists" but I ended up creating my own in a format that works for me. I then printed off one for each venue, and filled in some of the information that I could prior to the tour.

3. Take your fiancé's style & personality into the equation. This might seem like a no-brainer, but sometimes you have to remember that this is their day too. Initially, Kyle told me that the wedding was mine to plan since he took care of the proposal, but as we started looking he started getting more involved by expressing what he did and didn't like. We were on the same page 100%, but it was important for me to listen to his thoughts and try and see his vision for our special day. If you and your fiancé aren't having the same vision after a couple venue tours, make sure you sit down and talk it through, and try to see where you can make some compromises. You might have to do a little more research to find a place that accommodates your desires.

4. Take note of the vibe you get from the person giving you the tour. I'm big on first impressions, and the venues Kyle and I crossed off the list as soon as we walked out the door were due to us not connecting with the tour guide. Typically, the tours are done by someone on the event staff, so it's highly likely you'll be working with them from day one. They need to be organized, courteous, and wanting to cater to your needs. One venue's coordinator took forever to respond back to me about a tour, and another did not make the venue seem special at all. When we toured the venue we picked, the owner jumped right into "this is where you'd start your walk down the aisle, this is where we have the ceremony in case of rain, this is where we set up the buffet…" She was so on top of everything, I had no further questions at the end! THAT, my friends, is the type of person you want to work with on your special day.

5. Don't be afraid to cross things off early. We toured a venue attached to a lodge up in Estes Park, and I didn't realize from pictures just how hotel-like it was. We stuck through the tour, but we could both tell neither of us loved it. While we have a lot of people coming in from out of town and hotel accommodations on site are a nice touch, we just didn't feel like it was personal enough. After driving by another venue and finding it to be the same style, and I emailed the coordinator and said we had decided on something else. No need to waste anyone's time once you have a better idea of the vibe you are wanting.

6. Unless you have all the time in the world, look for a venue that balances included and customizable features. Since I'll be planning while still in school in another state, I wanted a venue that included a lot of things, just to make it easy on myself. At the same time, I want to add personal touches wherever I can. The venue we chose includes bar and wait staff, linens, tables, chairs for both ceremony and reception, cutlery, plates, and more. Now I don't have to deal with arranging rentals, or analyzing a venue's list of extra add-ons that cost money.

7. Consider existing decor. One of the venues we toured had possibly one of the ugliest carpets I'd ever seen. The reception chairs had an equally blah upholstery, and it cost extra to have simple white chairs. As an interior design major, I'm not about to look at that all night! It's not in my budget to cover the entire floor with something, so that venue was out in a heartbeat. The more your venue's existing decor goes with your vision, the less work you have to do! We chose a place whose reception area has amazing stone floors, great lighting, and included rustic decor that goes with my vision. All I'm doing is centerpieces!

Long story short, you'll know when you've found the perfect place for you and your fiancĂ© to start the next adventure in your lives. For Kyle and I, the first venue we toured stole our hearts. The outdoor ceremony space with views of the Twin Peaks & Rocky Mountains, the indoor rustic reception area, the included features, and of course the wonderfully organized owner had us sold very early on. We compared everything other venue to this one, and I could just picture how perfect everything would look come August 13, 2016 when Kyle and I tie the knot!

Best of luck on your venue hunting! Anyone have any other tips for the brides or future brides out there?

Wedding Wednesday: Engagement Party Review

Wednesday, April 22, 2015

Last weekend my friends hosted a little engagement party for me, in celebration of the next and greatest journey in my life. When they offered, I had told them that I didn't want them to spend a lot of money or go all out, I just wanted a chance to celebrate with some of my friends who are graduating and won't be in town next year! It ended up being the most perfect of festivities, and I am just so blessed to have so many great friends in my life! Today, I'm just sharing a few snapshots from the day...

In addition to the fun times and laughs, the decor and food spread was adorable! They did such a great job, and it was just perfect! :)

My friend Lauren who rocks at all things graphic design made the invites!

Loved the little photo booth props!

Each guest had been asked to bring a picture of her and I that represented their favorite memory, and they were displayed on the balloons. I plan on doing something cute with all of them!

My friend Caroline makes fantastic macaroons... these were pink champagne and key lime!

It was such a fun day, shoutout to all my friends who made it so very special!

The Most Perfect of Weekends

Monday, March 30, 2015

It's been a busy past couple of days! Since last Thursday, a lot has happened...

* Kyle came into town for an Eric Church concert
* My mom came into town for Alpha Phi's Mom's Weekend
* I took my mom and my brother with me to Jacksonville to go wedding dress shopping... and we were successful! The perfect dress is on order!

It was so nice to have my mom here, to hang out with and do all the things that moms love to do. Taking the weekend off to spend time with her was just awesome, of course now as I right this quick post I'm thinking about all the homework I didn't do that now needs to be done... EEEK! But it's okay, I had the most perfect of weekends and nothing can take that away from me! :) Here are some snapshots from the weekend...

Eric Church with my handsome fiance!

Lunch on the beach post-dress shopping in Jacksonville.

My mom and I went to Old Navy to find dresses for me for Italy this summer... we were successful! (Purchased the maxi in navy, but am ordering it in this green color also! It's so comfortable.)

She's just the best mom around...

It was such a fun weekend, lots of good memories! I hope y'all had a great weekend as well!

Wedding Wednesday: Save The Dates

Wednesday, March 25, 2015

As soon as you get engaged, people start asking you left and right "When's the wedding?" "What are you thinking about this that and the other thing?!" It can get a little overwhelming, but at the same time it's kind of fun to have so many people interested in how you're going to celebrate the rest of your life with the man of your dreams. Since I'm in school, and will be for another year, I'm trying to make sure I just take planning step by step, and not go too crazy. Honestly though, as pretty as all the glitz and glamour-filled weddings are, Kyle and I are a pretty laid-back couple, and that just doesn't suit us at all. A wedding day is a celebration of your future together, not a showcase of how much you spent on every lavish thing. At least in my mind!

Anyway, I had the idea to share the steps of the wedding planning process with y'all, in a series called Wedding Wednesday! It begins today with some unique Save the Date ideas.

Very cute Save the Dates with included magnet! (Source)

I think this style Save the Date is more my style; just simple lettering over a photo! Lots of other ideas in the full article as well.  (Source)

I like the mini-love story that's included in these Save the Dates. (Source)

These would be perfect for a destination wedding! (Source)

Such a cute DIY tutorial, and a great idea to help your guests mark their calendars! (Source)

Love this idea! So cute, but definitely a project that would take time and help from friends & family. (Source)

I LOVE THESE. I mean, they have rose gold foil on them, which would match my ring. Hmm.... :) (Source)

We are still working on what date exactly, but we have a general idea in our heads. In the mean time, it's just fun to get an idea of what I might like to do! For those of you who are already married... any tips for this newly-engaged girl?! Any little rid bits to help with the planning?

Happy Wedding Wednesday!

Five Friday Favorites

Friday, March 20, 2015

Man this week has flown by! It seems like only yesterday we were in Colorado and I was being proposed to! :) Here's a little bit about how my week went...

1. I celebrated St. Pratick's Day a day early by wearing this green dress to Jeweler Training. While I was still tired from traveling over the weekend and I didn't feel like going, I am glad I did. I just love my job and my sister jewelers!
2 & 4. The flowers around campus this week have really started to bloom. It seemed like every day I was seeing something new and beautiful and I really loved it.
3. To combat the cooler (ish) mornings and hot afternoons, I brought back out my peachy linen pants for a mid-week #ootd. I love how these colors bring out the rose gold of my ring.
5. I still can't get over this ring!!!! Eeeppp! It pairs perfectly with the Lillian Eve Ballet Slipper polish  I am obsessed with. I sent it off to be resized this week, and I already feel naked without it!

I have a weekend full of homework ahead of me, but I hope y'all have something more fun planned!
Happy Friday!

Marry Your Best Friend

Monday, March 16, 2015

So something kind of big happened this spring break... I got engaged!!! My sweet, handsome boyfriend of 6 years got down on one knee and asked for it all to never end, and words cannot even begin to explain how excited I am for this next chapter of our lives! I cannot wait to marry my best friend! :)

Keeping the minute details between Kyle and I, he proposed on a hike around our favorite lake up in Estes Park, after spending the day up in town like we've done on many a date. He asked me on the rock outcropping that overlooks the whole lake, and it was just perfect! Then we went back home to a reception where he had arranged all of our family and friends to be there in celebration.

A few snapshots from the day...

I was so oblivious to what was about to happen... the last photo was taken just before Kyle proposed! When I turned around I also somehow managed to miss the photographer hiding just off the trail that he hired to take pictures of the whole thing. Phew!

It was so nice to have some of my best friends at the reception party he organized...

And then I enjoyed keeping it enough of a secret to have an special Alpha Phi ceremony and share my excitement with all my sisters!

We are really excited--Kyle because his long period of secret planning is over, me because my wedding-related Pinterest boards will finally be used!-- and excited to start this next chapter in our lives and to see what God has in store for us. He has blessed our lives thus far in many ways, and I know he will continue to do so.

And because I'm sure you're wanting to see a close-up picture of the ring...

He did such a good job, with the ring, the proposal, with everything! I truly have an amazing fiancé (ahh! such an exciting word!) and I feel incredibly blessed. I think I'll keep him :)

Have a fantastic Monday!
